Say it with flowers

Have you ever chanced upon a beautiful floral arrangement and wondered who was person who had created such work of art and beauty and how? Imagine just taking some ordinary flowers and foliage and being able to create an impressive `thing of beauty' in a very short period of time! Flowers are used as an expression of love, hope and sympathy. They speak to one and all and flower arranging is an art that most of us wish we knew! It's a skill that requires deftness of touch and imagination.

Floral arrangement/ designing can be an exciting `on- the- side' career where you can be creative, do your own business and make good money too. People of all ages, from all kinds of working backgrounds are getting trained to enter the floristry industry. The floral artist can enjoy creative work in which he or she helps people communicate through flowers. In other words it can be a feel good vocation: innovative, creative and pleasant.

A floral designer interprets the customer's requirements into floral designs for all occasions. They work with combinations of different flowers, constantly synthesizing and developing ideas for new creations. Originality has to be their forte.

Here are some areas for florists to explore:

Floral designers supervise decorations for parties, weddings and during festive occasions

They may be involved in associated fields such as interior designing where they play an important role in creating an atmosphere.

Floral designers are in demand in hotels, restaurants and as floral managers

You could get involved with the wholesale operations of flowers

A floral designer's job does require effort, craftsmanship and skill. If one is serious about making floral designing a career some prerequisite training is vital. An eye for colour and detail, willingness to experiment and lots of practice are essential. Good communication skills help if one is running one's own business. Some faculty in sales, organisation and finance is also necessary. Many florists go in for apprenticeship classes or attend short- term courses coupled with self-study to get a hang of the work.

In addition to these courses there are some websites that offer correspondence courses in floristry and floral designing. Some of them are www.internationalfloraldesignschool.com, www.pcdi-homestudy.com (a site that offers video classes) and www.floral-art-school.co.au (a site that offers a free course option).

What better way to earn some extra money than in the colourful, fragrant company of joyous blooms!
