Landscape gardening as a career
A HOUSE and its environs-- the surrounding gardens, plants, trees and lawns... these go to make a wondrous home! Ever thought of the people who transform, with a sweep of their rakes your house into a home? Behold, the landscape gardener! These professionals are not mere job-gardeners, who just potter about wearing sun hats, pulling weeds and planting bulbs! Landscape gardening is an exacting job, involving elements of art, science and creativity.
Landscape gardening is the fine art of creating and preserving greenery. Landscape gardeners work on private property, public grounds, golf courses and indoor gardens to create designer gardens. They are specially trained and often truly gifted people who use their knowledge of botany, zoology, plant symbiosis and soil science their wonders to perform
Since a landscape architect has to spend hours outdoors they need stamina and strength and should be ready for plenty of hard work. They should have the creativity of an artist and the flair of a designer. Landscape gardeners should be respectful of the environment in which they work while keeping in mind the needs and requirements of the client. They need good communication skills and the ability to work alone as well as a part of a team.
Some of the tasks that a landscape gardener is expected to perform:
Consulting with architects, clients, nursery personnel and garden workers about projects
Preparing the ground for planting
Transplanting nursery stock
Have expert knowledge about chemical and natural herbicides and pesticides
Arrange for routine lawn and garden maintenance for regular customers
Provide suggestions and advice on plant selection and care

Dr. Yashwant Singh Parmar University of Horticulture & Forestry, Nauni, Solan (HP) has an M.Sc programme in Floriculture & Landscaping.The Yashwantrao Chavan Maharashtra Open University, Nasik offers a diploma in landscape gardening. Landscape architecture is offered as a postgraduate course (Master's of LA) to graduates in architecture, civil engineering and town planning.
The Punjab Agricultural University, (Department of Floriculture and Landscaping) PAU, offers offers courses in floriculture and landscaping to undergraduate and postgraduate
(M. Sc.) students.A PG Diploma in Interiors and Landscape Design is offered at NISIET, Hyderabad .
A typical day will be spent outdoors, planning, planting, and maintaining the gardens. Landscape architects have to be trained as technicians, architects, or arborists.
One has to acquire skills through apprenticeship or training programmes. On the job training is often as good as classroom sessions and certainly more interesting!
