(Questions answered on career concerns)
In an interview, I was asked, "How would you handle rejection?" How should I have answered this?
Sailesh Bhat
Bangalore
This question is very popular, especially while recruiting sales personnel. Considering the competition in today's market, interviewers are particular about how rejection affects a candidate. One might respond along these lines: "I accept rejection as part of job profile. I am accustomed to taking rejection calmly and moving on with the conviction that my next sales call would yield better results. It is important to let them know that you would not take rejection personally or get dejected.
Sometimes the reasons for the rejection are obvious. It is probable that you did not present yourself well or you were late for the call or even this interview. Or, they might have an internal candidate lined up or they could have already accepted a candidate. So answer with tact.

I am slowly losing interest in my studies. How do I motivate myself?
Rajan
Chennai
If you need to secure your future, identify your goals first. Realise that only a good education and good grades would help you meet your goals.
Streamline your study habits. Use your time wisely. Set priorities by making a timetable. Give yourself enough time for each task, and take a break once you accomplish that. Follow the schedule you have set ,no matter what.
Break large assignments into bite-sized chunks. Also avoid long time periods for study. You might accomplish more if you schedule yourself to study/work in 60 minute blocks, than if you study/work for 2-3 hours continuously. Promise to reward yourself after you complete each task.
Group study with friends could also help if you prefer to work in a team. However, ensure that all are committed to the same study calendar.
Create a pleasant work environment. Eliminate or at least minimise noise/distractions. Make sure you have adequate lighting and facilities like pencils, paper, and reference books at hand. Be neat! Take a few minutes to straighten your desk. Avoid clutter. You will not waste time searching for things. That adds to dejection.
