Could you give me some tips on improving my communication skills?

Yogesk Rangrao Shuidkar

Good communication skills help you express your ideas clearly, learn from other people, and help you resolve any conflicts. Most of these skills are picked up from life experience. Here are a few tips for improving your communication skills:

Be clear

Make sure you understand what you want to say before you start speaking. Explain the context of your point so your listener clearly understands why you are talking to them -- Are you asking for a favour? Are you trying to tell an important fact? Do you want to know something? Use simple words and language to express your point.

Stay positive

Phrase your ideas and suggestions in a positive, rather than critical way. Be confident. Don't assume that what you have to say isn't worthwhile. Keep in mind, a listener's silence doesn't necessarily mean consent or disapproval. It may just mean that the person needs to think about a response before answering.

Listen actively

Make sure you understand what the other person is trying to say. Try paraphrasing someone's point -- "So, what you are saying is..." -- and see if you got it.

Don't get so preoccupied planning what you'll say next that you don't pay attention. Keep an open mind. Make sure you understand someone's point before you react. Speak with self-control -- don't just say the first response that comes to mind.

I have attended a number of interviews and faced rejection always. I feel that my interview skills are not up to the mark. How can I improve my skills?

Sanjeev Sathe
Pune

Prior to an interview take time to learn as much as you can about a potential employer.

Remember you have only one chance to make a first impression. Because first impressions are lasting, it is important to wear clothing that is appropriate to the serious nature of the interview. If you are interviewing for Management, Sales, Engineering, or other similar opportunities, strive to present a professional appearance.

First things first...

Arrive 10 to 15 minutes before the interview is scheduled. Giving yourself some extra time reduces anxiety and gives you the opportunity to mentally prepare for the interview.

Think about something pleasant in your life, take a few deep breaths, and allow yourself to relax.

When the time comes to begin the interview, remember to start off on a positive note. A firm handshake, a sincere smile, and a friendly greeting are all that's needed to get things going your way.

Keep it simple. Minimise miscommunication by following these suggestions:

Think before you speak. Phrase what you say in short, simple sentences.

Answer one question at a time.

Do not volunteer information - provide just the information needed to answer the question. Get to the point.

Stay positive - NEVER say or imply anything about a past employer that is less than complimentary.

Ask questions - Asking questions communicates to the company your sincerity, interest, and maturity. In addition, asking questions often leads to a more open conversation and a more relaxed interview that is beneficial to both parties.
