Now that you have all the information you need about the fair, you must be raring to go! But wait a minute; remember that in a job fair you will be pitted against so many others equally qualified and as eager to land that job. So you need to do something that will set you apart and give you that winning edge. Here are a few pointers that can help you:

• Make a list of all the items, which you need at the fair and take them along without fail

• Take multiple copies of your resume. It would be a wise move to make different versions of the resume for different companies

• Carry along reference letters, recommendations (if any), a portfolio of your work, etc. Do remember to carry a file or folder, which can hold your papers neatly organised.

• Review the list of organisations that will be attending the fair, then research those that are of interest to you. With so much information about companies on the Internet, research is easy.

• Though not all employers conduct preliminary interviews at the fair there is no harm in going well prepared to talk to potential recruiters.

• Dress to impress! Dress as if you are going to attend a formal interview. Your dress can tell a lot about how serious and professional your attitude is.

In job fairs, there are some don’ts to be followed too. Here are some common mistakes that you wouldn’t want to make:

• Don’t say things like, “I’m ready to do anything”. It can mean desperation.

• Don’t be stingy with your resumes

• Don’t go unprepared. Learn something about the companies you are interested in

• Don’t be short on enthusiasm

• Don’t ask inappropriate questions or the wrong questions (e.g. about salary)

• Don’t sport a bad attitude

We hope some of these ground rules will help in your preparation for the fair. The bottom line is to present yourself in a professional manner, convey maturity, be respectful and arrive prepared. All the best!
