Impressive recital

Lakshmi Parthasarathy Athreya.

LAKSHMI PARTHASARATHY Athreya, a disciple of Chitra Visweswaran, presented an impressive thematic presentation "Kodai Alwar" at the Karthik Fine Arts. Lakshmi was able to give us a glimpse of this intense import of Andal's poems. Dressed cheerfully in pink and green, Lakshmi began the dance with the processing of Andal towards the Srirangam temple. It was a neat opening.

After a long introduction in Tamil which described Andal's story and her poems (though well done, was such a long introduction necessary in Tamil for the Tamil poems?), Lakshmi became Andal and took us through a journey of Andal's exquisite agony.

Beginning with the fundamental mantra, the eight syllable Om Namo Narayana and giving a glimpse of the Dashavatara, Lakshmi used her long limbs and expressive effectively to convey the drama, particularly in the Narasimha episode. The frustration and pathos were very well conveyed towards the end. Simple jathis added to the beauty of the production. Vijay Madhavan acquitted himself well as the Nattuvanar.
