Temples under renovation

CULTURAL HERITAGE Renaissance Trust, formed to renovate, preserve and maintain rare architectural structures and set tright those in a dilapidated condition in ancient temples, has taken up, with the blessings of the Acharyas of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, the renovation of the following temple sin Thanjavur district: Sri Varadaraja Perumal temple and Sri Chockanatha temple (both in Tirumangaicheri village) and Sri Sundareswara Swamy temple in Neikuppai village. Both villages are on the Sirkazhi road in Tiruvidaimarudur taluk, 20 km from Kumbakonam
Tirumangai Azhwar is said to have visited Sri Varadaraja Perumal temple, built by the Chola rulers 900 years ago. The Anjaneya idol here is unusual with the Lord keeping His right foot forward ready to rush to the devotee's rescue. There is a shrine for Sri Lakshminarasimhar. The Trust has so far spent Rs. 1 lakh to clear the vegetation and repair the cracks. Equally ancient, the Chockanathaswamy (consort Soundaryanayaki) temple has rare icons and Panchaloha idols which will be lost if the structure is not strengthened. To begin with, iron gates have been provided replacing the worn-out wooden ones. Situated on the banks of the Manniyar, a tributary of the Cauveri, Sri Sundareswara Swamy temple in Neikuppai is one of the shrines where Sun worships Siva for three days every year. The temple has unique idols and icons. The renovation work in the temples is estimated at Rs. 3 lakhs each and the Trust appeals for contributions to complete the task.
