Assam Sahitya Sabha for talks with ULFA
Guwahati, July 4 (PTI): The Asom Sahitya Sabha, the apex literary body of Assam, has urged the ULFA and other insurgent groups to give up their demand for secession and sit for unconditional talks with the government.
In a resolution passed at the end of the two-day Asom Maha Sanmilan, an event organised by the Sabha that ended here yesterday, the literary body rejected the demand for secession and urged ULFA and other militant groups to come forward for unconditional talks.
The session, attended by writers, intellectuals, and representative of student bodies, decided to approach the state and Central governments for finding a solution to burning problems confronting the people.
The body asked the Centre to provide safe passage to militants willing to hold talks with the government and to declare dates for unconditional talks.
"But at the same time the Centre should ensure that the innocent citizens of Assam are not harassed and human rights not violated at the time of operations by security agencies," a resolution said.
Voicing concern at the increasing infiltration from neighbouring Bangladesh, the Sabha said this threatened to change the state's demographic pattern and posed a threat to indigenous people.
