Chandigarh (PTI): The standoff between Punjab's ruling coalition partners BJP and Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) in the wake of attacks on saffron party activists allegedly by SAD workers during panchayat polls ended on Tuesday with the suspension of two police officers.

After about a four-hour meeting between Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal and BJP leaders and MLAs led by the party's state affairs incharge Balbir Punj it was decided that the Superintendent of Police and Deputy Superintendent of Police of Tarn Taran district stand suspended in the wake of attack on BJP MLA Anil Joshi allegedly by SAD activists a day ahead of panchayat polls yesterday.

Putting up a united face after the "bitterness" on the issue of attack on BJP activists at several places in the state by SAD activists, Badal and Punj told a joint press conference that the IG (border) will probe the attack on the BJP MLA and submit his report.

Badal said that the state government will also take action against Deputy Commissioner and Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) of Tarn Taran for allegedly failing to take up necessary action in time againt those involved in the attack on the MLA and his supporters.

Besides, Badal also assured that all incidents of violence against BJP activists during the polls would be probed and stern action taken against the guilty.
