Chalk makes his mark, scoring 2 tries in Canberra win
Sydney (AP): Canberra center Marshall Chalk scored two tries on Sunday as the Raiders upset the Sydney Roosters 34-12 in Australia's National Rugby League.
Played in wet and cold conditions at Canberra Stadium, Chalk scored his first four pointer in the 33rd minute and had his second six minutes later just before halftime.
In the other Sunday match, the Wests Tigers halted South Sydney's five-game winning streak, beating the Rabbitohs 36-12. It also snapped the Tigers' four-game losing streak.
On Saturday, winger Michael Gordon scored two tries and kicked six goals for a personal tally of 20 points as the Penrith Panthers beat the Gold Coast Titans 36-22. Frank Pritchard also scored two tries for the winners as the Titans lost their third straight home game.
Winger Manu Solomona scored three tries to lead the New Zealand Warriors to a 40-22 win over the Bulldogs.
A pair of second-half goals gave Cronulla a 16-13 win over Newcastle. Trailing 13-12 at halftime, Cronulla got goals from Luke Covell in the 55th and 78th minutes as the Sharks rallied to win.
On Friday, first-place Manly beat Parramatta 28-10, handing the Eels their third straight loss and putting them in danger of missing the playoffs.
The Eels failed to capitalize on an opportunity for an upset after Manly lost halfback Matt Orford with a thigh injury before kickoff and five-eighth Jamie Lyon (knee) and Jason King (ankle) early in the first half at Manly's Brookvale Oval.
The Brisbane Broncos, scoring five unanswered tries in the first half, handed North Queensland its 11th straight loss, beating the Cowboys 32-18.
Brisbane coach Wayne Bennett was nonetheless critical of his side's performance, particularly in the second half when the Broncos let the Cowboys back into the match.
``We were rubbish,'' Bennett said. ``It wasn't even a case of scoring more points, they (the Cowboys) were a lot more disciplined in the second half.''
Brisbane captain Darren Lockyer, rested for the last nine minutes of the match, agreed with Bennett.
``We have got a lot to work on,'' Lockyer said. ``It was a pretty somber mood in the dressing room. We realize the second half was pretty ordinary, 26-0 at halftime.''
On Monday, Melbourne, trying to keep pace with Manly, Cronulla and the Roosters among the top four, plays St. George Illawarra to close out the 19th round.
