Q & A ON CAREER CONCERNS FAQs
Which of the following courses promise a bright future in the IT
field - MCA (3 years) from IGNOU or a B level from DOEACC. Please
advise.
B. S. Choudhury
Rourkela
You can pursue either of these courses, though it is more
important to perfect the practical applicability of the course.
Although both the courses are rated equal, a degree in MCA holds
greater recognition. It is always better to compare the
curriculum of both the courses and then arrive at a decision.
I am doing MA final year and want to take up computer courses.
How should I go about it and which institutions can help me out?
What courses are available in Maharashtra and what courses should
I take up?
Yeola Vinod Suresh
Jalgaon (Maharastra)
There are a number of computer courses available everywhere and
taking up one is dependent on your subject of interest and its
applicability. You can start with courses like Unix, C, C++,
Corba and later do advanced courses like Internet programming and
designing. Information regarding courses and institutes in
Maharashtra can be got from the local dailies, television
advertisements and websites.
I am doing B.Tech. (Mechanical) from Pondicherry Engineering
College (PEC). My aim is to become an aeronautical/ space
engineer, after B.Tech. What course should I take up after my
bachelor's degree?
H. Mohammed Ashraf
Pondicherry
The required qualification to work as an aeronautical engineer is
a B.E./B.Tech. degree with specialisation in aeronautical
engineering. You can do your M.Tech in aeronautics offered by
Indian Institute of Science. You might like to write to ISRO for
some information on Space Engineering.
I have done a diploma in Mechanical engineering and now I am
doing my BCA final year from IGNOU. I am also planning to
complete my MCA from there. What are the career prospects after
that? Is the MCA degree from IGNOU recognised in USA and other
countries for job as well as study purpose? Should I go in for
MCA regular or M.Sc. computer science?
Anuj Awasthi
Sagar (M.P.)
If it is a choice between a regular MCA and one from IGNOU, the
former would definitely hold better prospects. It's always better
if you can do your PG through regular college than by
correspondence. A post graduation course done through IGNOU is
valid all over India. For overseas jobs however, preference is
given to regular university courses.
I am a finance professional (C.A.) with 12 years experience in
accounts/finance/system including 17 months as system analyst. I
would like to switch my career completely to software. Please
advise me on the opportunities and avenues available for my
background. I have done ERP course in Oracle financials and I am
also willing to undergo adequate training to achieve my purpose
of establishing a career in software/IT. Presently I am working
as an accountant in Liberia, West Africa.
Hariharan
Liberia (West Africa)
You can definitely make a career in the software field. ERP jobs
essentially come to those fulfilling certain educational
criteria, functional experience and implementation exposure.
Since you possess the needed educational background and the
necessary experience you could make a switch as a functional
consultant. ERP is well paying and popular in the US as compared
to its popularity in India.
I did my graduation from Delhi University and enrolled for MIT
course from Manipal University. Recently I came to know that MCA
and BE are B level degrees while MIT is not. Is MIT equal to MCA?
What is the difference between the two? Should I switch over to
MCA or pursue my PG in MIT?
Saurabh
Patna
Both MCA and MIT are postgraduate degree courses but MCA is a
more widely recognised course though more traditional. MIT is
emergent and in vogue. As for the difference an MCA is a three
years course where as MIT is of two years duration, after a 3
year BIT course.
I am a graduate in Law from the University of Allahabad and am
interested in doing a course in forensic science (degree/
diploma). The problem is that I do not know of any such
institution that conducts this course. Kindly help me.
Ali Raza
Allahabad
The Tata Institute of Social Sciences offers a course in
Criminology and Correctional Administration. The Doctor Harisingh
Gour Vishwavidyalaya of Madhya Pradesh offers a course in
Criminology and Forensic science. You can correspond with them
for further information. You can also try the Indian Academy of
Forensic Medicine, Maulana Azad Medical College, New Delhi-
110002, the Department of Forensic Science, University of Sagar,
Sagar (MP). The University of Madras too offers a Masters of
Science in the subject.
I am doing my B.Sc in computer science. I want to know the future
prospects of this field. Should I go in for M.Sc in computer
science or in Information Technology or do MCA? I also want to
know which colleges in India are the best ones to pursue these
courses.
Ajaya Kumar Nanda
Sambalpur
You can opt for any of the masters' degree mentioned. An M.Sc in
computer science would be more theoretically oriented while an
M.Sc in information technology would include a course in hardware
as well. MCA is for a period of three years and the emphasis is
more on software rather than hardware. Universities such as JNU,
University of Hyderabad, and JNTU (Hyderabad) offer MCA while IIT
(Madras), Indian Statistical Institute (West Bengal) and IIT
(Kanpur) offer M.Sc. in Computer Science and BIT (Ranchi) offers
M.Sc. (Information Science).
I am an undergraduate, working in a government organisation. I
want to complete my graduation now to secure a promotion . Kindly
let me know which universities offer a correspondence course at
the degree level. Is there any chance of completing my degree in
one attempt?
S. Hazi Rahamatulla
Ananthapur
All universities allow you, indeed expect you, to clear your
papers in one attempt. You will need to pass your exams year by
year to progress to the next stage. However, university rules do
not permit one to take all the exams at one go. One can only
clear compartmental exams that have accumulated, in one sitting.
