Q & A ON CAREER CONCERNS

Dated 08th November, 2000

I have completed my Intermediate (+2) and have taken the entrance examination for Engineering. I am sure of securing a seat in REC, Tamil Nadu. I have to choose either BE- electrical and electronic engineering (EEE) or electronic and communication engineering (ECE). My friends have suggested that I take up BE computer science instead. I am confused. Please suggest which would be the better option?

M. Prasanna,

Mannargudi

A career decision is usually made on the basis of one's interest in a particular field. There is a great demand for engineers in the computer science field and if you are interested in a career in software this would be the best option. Electronics and communications is a good option too, as these professionals are in great demand in the telecom industry.

I am pursuing MBA Finance from IGNOU. I would like to know its prospects and the placement facilities in this field. Will my degree help me compete with the regular MBA finance / CA/ICWA students?

Subrat,

Bhubaneshwar

Opportunities in the field of finance are tremendous and those with an MBA degree with a specialisation in either marketing or finance can find rewarding jobs. As we have mentioned earlier any course pursued through the regular stream holds greater value when compared to a course done through correspondence. CA/ICWA are specialised courses in finance that have a select job market and hence the question of competition with the same does not arise.

I am doing my III year B.E in computer science. What are the job prospects in this field?

S. N. Snichandan,

Rayagada

There are ample opportunities available for candidates who possess an engineering degree in computer science. Systems administration, systems analysis, programming, database administration, networking and maintenance are some of the specialisations that an engineer in computer sciences could major in and find excellent job openings.

I am studying Intermediate (+2) and I want to become a pilot. What are the courses that are available? What are the qualifications required?

T.G. Keerthi Kumar,

Chennai

The Indira Gandhi Rashtriya Uran Academy is one of the first institutes to be set up in India that offers the required training. The cadets trained in the academy are eligible for an Indian commercial pilot's licence. The minimum eligibility criterion is an Intermediate or plus two certification from the Central Board of Secondary Examination or from an equivalent board or university with mathematics and physics as compulsory subjects. The Academy conducts a written exam. You can visit their website for further information: www.civilaviation.nic.in/igrua/ind-text.htm.

I am pursuing BA (Honours) in History from Delhi University. After completion I want to take up Law from a reputed college or university. I would be highly obliged if you could list the names of the universities that offer this course, the eligibility requirements and information about entrance exam. Please tell me the best way to prepare for the same.

Sakshi Monga,

New Delhi

A graduate course in law is offered by most colleges and universities. Universities of Madras and Pune, Andhra and Nagpur University are some of the better known ones that offer a three year graduate course (BL/LLB) and a two year course in BGL--Bachelor of General Law . Banglore University and the University of Lucknow also offer a bachelor's degree in Law. The best in this genre is the degree offered by the Law faculty of your university.

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU), the first Law University in India offers legal education in a multi- disciplinary context at the undergraduate and postgraduate levels. The university offers a five year course, BA. LLB (Hons), preparing students for the Bar and other careers in law.

In your August 30th issue of `Opportunities', you had mentioned in your FAQ's column that a `Focus' had been written on agriculture. I would like to have more details about the issue if possible. I would like to mention here that I am an agricultural professional who would like to pursue studies/ career options abroad. Kindly let me know how and where can I get more information and sources or addresses. I would like to add that your paper and the issues covered are impressive. May be because it is so hard to get it here or the fact that I am missing good old AP!

Raveendra Nath. Y,

Ahmedabad
