FINGER TIPS

Get connected!

WHAT is the first thing you'd do if you wanted a job? What is best method that has worked for you in the past? Think of times you searched for contacts when you wanted to relocate and wished you had known more people.

Every professional needs to network. Seven out of every 10 successful career opportunities are a result of networking. The human element in networking gives a touch of authenticity that makes referrals click.

So, if you are in a network where opportunities are afloat, then you have a very good chance of being selected for an interview.

You need to realise the importance of networking - it just might be the break you are looking for!

Networking is maintaining and communicating with contacts in a two-way relationship where both parties benefit mutually.

This is useful while seeking newer and greener pastures and better networking does mean better jobs.

Archetypal networks

Personal: This includes you near and dear ones, friends and well- wishers. Networking in this sphere is necessary for your emotional support.

Social: These are the people you know from school and college, people you've met at parties, get-togethers, hobby clubs, games partners, neighbours etc.

Professional: Colleagues, ex-colleagues, bosses, ex-bosses, clients, and people you meet at seminars, etc.

Vital contact

It is not enough if you have the support of a good network, you should know how to make use of it effectively. Communicating your need specifically is just as important. Don't directly ask for a job, this may not be the best thing to do.

Asking for help, advice, leads and information would be a better idea.

A two-way channel

Networking is not merely using your contacts for your benefit; it is about getting to know people better.

Share your ideas and feelings, discuss experiences and learn from their successes or setbacks faced. This can also give you the initiative to try out something new.

Get the job done

Don't neglect work related social gatherings, meets etc. Someone who knows his way around can get you out of a tight spot and provide you with the necessary expertise or advise, thereby helping you cope.

Contacts also come handy when you need help, information and honest appraisals. They can also aid you in your sales and marketing efforts.

Get noticed

Networking gives you career opportunities, which would not otherwise be yours.

Make sure you stay in touch with the human resource staff at your workplace - it is their field of interest, interaction and involvement. HR managers normally have good contacts and are likely to know about job openings available at any given point in time, or provide valuable inside information and leads.

Re-connect

You may not have taken the time or trouble to keep in touch with ex-colleagues, bosses, or old friends, but you can always start today.

With the Net at your disposal, it is easier to get in touch with old acquaintances. Remember not to restrict yourself only to online means of networking. Spend a reasonable amount of time on a regular basis to maintain a healthy network with your contacts.

Don't just vamoose from the scene once your work is done. You need to give as much as you take.

Schmooze or lose

List out all your contacts in an address book. Always carry your business card with you when on official work and also at social gatherings.

Make sure you take the address of the person you've met. The best way to sustain a network is to find a common interest. Network with people of the same profession or interests as you.

Networking is not a technique; it is an attitude. Building a good rapport with peers and associates is essential for anyone who wants to be a success. If you have a wide circle of contacts, you can get valuable insights and first hand accounts of organisational working and get access to the latest opportunities, which will help you stay current and contemporary.
