Q & A ON CAREER CONCERNS Dated 27th December, 2000
I have completed my graduation in commerce and I wish to pursue
ICWA. Kindly suggest an institute in Andhra Pradesh offering ICWA
course. Are there any correspondence courses for ICWA?
N. Rakesh,

The Institute of Cost and Works Accountants of India (ICWA) is
headquartered in Calcutta and has four regional councils and a
number of chapters in the different parts of India and abroad. It
is the only recognised statutory professional organisation and
licensing body in India specialising in Cost and Management
accountancy. You have the option of either pursuing an oral or
postal mode of education in the subject. You can correspond with
the following address, which is common for South India for
further information- Southern Regional Council of the ICWAI,
ICWAI Bhawan, 65, Montieth Lane, Egmore, Chennai.
I am a diploma holder in mechanical engineering and would like to
make a career in IT. Please suggest courses that should be
pursued in order to be a programmer.
Prashant,
Bagalkot
To become a programmer you would need to equip yourself with
courses in advanced software technology. This will require you to
achieve perfection in the essential programming languages and
courses in C, C++, Java and other related skill sets should be
helpful. Gaining international certifications will also aid you
in securing better employment opportunities in the field of
software. MCSE, MCNE, MCSD, JCP are some of the international
certifications.
My son has keen interest in drawing cartoons. Can you kindly
provide me the names and addresses of institutions offering
training courses in cartooning?
Renji George,
Amballoor, Goa
Those with an inborn talent and skill for caricaturing can opt
for various diploma and graduate courses that provide training in
the art. Visva-Bharati at Shantiniketan offers a graduate course-
Bachelor of Fine Arts. No institute offers a separate course in
cartooning. It can be a part of BFA curriculum. The duration of
the course is for a period of five- years and those who have
completed their higher secondary (intermediate or plus two) can
apply for the study programme. The institute also offers a
diploma course in Graphic Art, Fine Arts & Crafts Design, and
Drawing & Painting, the duration of which is also five-years. The
eligibility criterion is similar to that of the graduate course.
Institutes such as ZICA at Mumbai and the Heart Animation Academy
in Hyderabad also provide training in computer animation and
graphics.
I am a trained electrician from ITI. I want to do a Diploma in
Electricals from a recognised institute. Kindly provide me the

Technological University, Maharashtra; Dayalbagh Educational
Institute Uttar Pradesh; Aligarh Muslim University, Uttar
Pradesh; Utkal University Bhubaneshwar, Orissa; Rajasthan
Agricultural University, Bikaner, Rajasthan; Punjab University,
Chandigarh; and University of Baroda, Gujarat are some of the
Universities that offer the course. You can correspond with the

I am an arts graduate with basic knowledge in computers. I would
like to know which computer courses I should join so that I can
enhance my chances for good career prospects in India and abroad.
Jayant Singh,
New Delhi
There are lot of computer courses available in software as well
as hardware, and taking up one is dependent on your area of
interest and its applicability. As a beginner you can opt for
courses in computer fundamentals like Office 2000, You can then
get a certification from Oracle in order to be a database
administrator. If you wish to be a programmer training in C, C++,
Java are essential. Internet technologies will enable you to
specialise in web programming. Another alternative for you is
pursuing a course in web designing and multimedia related from a
recognised institute. You can also specialise in hardware apart
from courses in software. Taking up a course in IIHT could be a
good choice. If you can pursue a postgraduate course in MBA/MCA,
it could be an added advantage for you to enhance your career
prospects.
