Q & A ON CAREER CONCERNS Dated 11th Apr, 2001
I am a Mechanical Engineer and am presently working with a
reputed organisation. I would like to pursue photography as a
part time profession. Is there a diploma or a certificate course
available in Photograph? What about part time career
opportunities?
G. Lakshmi
Vijayawada
The field of photography promises opportunities aplenty.
Photographers who excel at their work are bound to bag
assignments consistently. Advertising agencies provide ample
opportunity for commercial photography. The University of
Allahabad, Deendayal Upadhyaya Gorakhpur University, Mahatma
Gandhi Kashi Vidyapith at Varanasi, M J P Rohilkhand University
at Bareily, (Uttar Pradesh); Jamia Millia Islamia at Jamia Nagar,
New Delhi; Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University at
Hyderabad, and Sri Venkateswara University at Tirupati, are some
of the universities that offer courses in photography. You could
correspond with the universities directly for more information
regarding the admission procedure, the course and fee structure.
I am an arts graduate from Delhi University. I want to take up a
job, but I don't have any relevant work experience. Most
companies prefer people with experience. I am confident that I
can do any job that comes my way. What should I do in such a
case?
Kamal Kishore
New Delhi
Most organisations do take in graduates and postgraduates without
experience for entry-level posts. Apply for posts that match your
educational qualifications and competence. Ensure that your
resume speaks suitably of your abilities and skill sets,
especially those apt for the job. Excellent communication skills
are also an added asset to land a good job. Commitment and a
sense of responsibility are key attitudes that any employer would
look for in a potential employee. Impress the same on your
potential employees during the process of an interview.
I am doing my final year BBA in finance and banking from a
reputed university. I am unable to decide what course to pursue
at the postgraduate level. Should I extend my internship program
further so that I can get employment in the same organisation or
should I take up a postgraduate study course in the same subject?
Kindly let me know if it would be a good decision to consider BBA
as a terminal degree and concentrate on acquiring work experience
in a good organisation.
Harish Goyal
Amritsar
If long-term career development is what you are aiming at, then a
graduate degree in BBA should not be considered as a terminal
degree. You could instead pursue MBA or any other related
specialisation rather than a prolonged period of internship. A
master's degree would definitely add more weight to your
qualification and ensure better employment opportunities. If
during your period of internship viable employment opportunities
arise at the place of internship, you could accept the same, and
if interested pursue a master's degree through correspondence.
