Q & A ON CAREER CONCERNS

Dated 20th Jun, 2001

I am doing my intermediate and want to pursue B.Sc. in nautical science in Vel's Academy of Maritime Studies (Chennai). What is the eligibility criterion and what are the future prospects of the course?

Michael,

Dindigul

For a graduate course in nautical sciences (3 years), you need to have mathematics, physics and chemistry in your intermediate. You need to qualify in the entrance exam conducted by IIT-JEE or an equivalent exam conducted by the institute. Students in this programme are trained to become officers on ships and have the opportunity to pursue a career that can take them from the most junior ranks to becoming a captain-in-command at sea.

I wanted to take up medicine, but could not get a good rank to get into MBBS or BDS and had to take up veterinary science in Bihar Veterinary College, Patna. I want to know the future prospects for the course.

Priyanka Choubey,

Patna

Several career options are open to graduates in veterinary science. Dairy and poultry farms require the services of a veterinarian. The veterinarian can also set-up private practice. The government also employs veterinarians as public health professionals whose services are employed in zoos, national parks and wildlife sanctuaries. If interested, you can take up teaching as well. Postgraduates in the field of veterinary science can go in for research.

I am pursuing my graduation through correspondence from Patna University and wish to pursue MBA form the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) after my graduation. Will I be eligible for appearing in IIMs' entrance exam in view of my graduation through correspondence and with low marks in intermediate? What is the eligibility criterion to appear for the exam?

Rajiv Singh,

Patna

A student who has done his graduation through correspondence is eligible to take the exam. The percentage obtained at the graduate level is taken into consideration for any of the master's degree programmes. For post graduation in management studies, the minimum requirement is a graduate degree in arts, science or technology. You would of course have to clear the selection processes. The lower cut-off percentage is usually around fifty per cent.
