Q & A ON CAREER CONCERNS Dated 25th July, 2001
I am doing my intermediate and interested in pursuing a career in
psychology. What are the initial earnings of a psychologist and
what is the major difference between a psychologist and a
psychoanalyst?
Ranjana
Chandigarh
Psychology as a profession is ideal for those who have an
interest in people, and strong people and social skills.
After a graduation in Psychology you can choose specialisations
like developmental psychology, clinical and applied psychology,
and organisational behaviour. A psychoanalyst is a psychologist
by training who later has selected to work as a therapist from
the Freudian perspective. There is no standard payment structure
in the industry. The private sector very often offers salaries,
which are negotiable and vary depending on an individual's
qualification.
If you choose to do private practice then it will take a while
before you can establish your practice.
I have done M.A. in drawing and painting. I am interested in
doing an advanced diploma in multimedia and web publishing.
Could you please provide me with more information about this
course and about the institutes that offer this course, career
prospects and job opportunities?
Anand Rai
New Delhi
Most private institutes offer a course in multimedia and web
publishing. A good way to start is to talk to the current
students and the alumni of the institutions before choosing the
course.
Jamia Milia Islamia, Jamia Nagar at New Delhi, and the ZED
Institute of creative art, Nagila Towers at Begumpet, Hyderabad
offer an excellent course in mass communication and a diploma
course in animation.
I have done my graduation in computers. I want to do my Master's
degree in the same from India or the U.S. How do I go about it?
If I wish to do it from the U.S., what are the basic requirements
and how can I fulfil those?
Sanjay Shukla
Haryana
Admission into MCA in India is through a common IT exam. This is
a three year course which is well recognised by the Indian
industry. If you are looking to do the course abroad then you
will have to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT).
For further details you can visit their website, www.gmat.org.
To pursue the MIS course, you have to secure good grades in GRE
(Graduate Record Examination). This is a two- year course in the
US and a one-year course in the UK.
For more information you can contact at the following address:
USEFI, 12 Hailey Road, New Delhi 110001 or you can also visit
their website

I have done my intermediate from the science stream. I want to
take-up a computer course. I want to whether know the `O', `A',
`B' and `C' levels certified by DOEACC are valid or not. Also
whether the `A' level is equivalent to BCA and if the `B' level
is equivalent to MCA or not?
Abhishek Kumar
Jaitipur
All the levels offered by the Department of Electronics
Accreditation of Computer Courses (DOEACC) are diploma courses
and not considered as a degree course.
If you are keen on making a career in IT, a degree course such as
a B.Tech or a BCA/ MCA would be more useful.
The `A' level DOEACC course is considered as an advanced diploma
level and a `B' level is equal to MCA. The course is recognised
only in India. For further information about the same, visit
www.doeacc.org.in.
I want to do a course in human resource management. What is the
mode of selection for the course and the job avenues open to me
after the completion of the course. Please mention the institutes
offering the course in Delhi and Bangalore.
Rajib Deb
Guwahati
Institutions hold their own entrance examination for a course in
management. Most of the universities also conduct management
degrees, which is again through entrance tests. Bangalore

Management Center, Faculty of Management Studies and the Indian
Institute of Technology, Center for Studies in New Delhi;
University of Delhi, Faculty of Management Studies, Delhi 110007;
and the Indira Gandhi Open University are some of the well-known
institutes and universities offering MBA in HRM.

industrial houses, manufacturing companies, corporations,
marketing organisations, financial concerns, trading companies,
banks, public sector enterprises, multinational corporations or
any non-governmental organisation including international bodies
like the World Bank, UN bodies, etc.
I am a first year graduate student in science and very interested
in ayurvedic studies. Please list the standard ayurvedic colleges
offering BAMS course. Is the selection for the course based on an
entrance test or on merit?
Tulasi Pr. Das
