MISCELLENAEOUS Ladyspeak: Sumithra Iyengar, owner of the spa - `Lifestyle Clinique' and the `Lifestyle Clinique Academy', Bangalore.
AFTER earning a degree in commerce, my fascination with the
beauty business led me to take up a number of short-term courses
in the subject. Spas were my special interest and I read
everything I could lay my hands on about them. Having lived in
Australia, I had the chance to visit some of the best spas in
that region. When I returned to India it was natural for me to
think of a health, beauty and fitness spa as the most appropriate
line to start an entrepreneurial business.
My core interest lies in the management of spas. I spent a lot of
time in Hong Kong with people who own some of best spas in South
East Asia, to learn the ropes. I also met leading beauty
therapists and attended fast track spa programmes to supplement
my learning. Today we have three spas and an academy in
Bangalore. We intend to take the `Lifestyle Clinique' to other
places through franchising.
Before setting up our centre in India, we had conducted a brief
study of the market needs, characteristics, competition and
demand analysis. We faced the initial teething problems of any
new business. There were cash-flow problems, dearth of qualified
staff, high employee turnover, and difficulty in sustaining the
business till a steady sales volume was achieved.
I selected each member of my team personally. High-level training
was given to therapists, stylists and administration and
operations staff. As a result of all the untiring efforts,
Lifestyle Clinique has been the most preferred spa and academy
for customers.
At our spa we have also started intensive in-house research to
develop the finest aromatherapy beauty treatments including
holistic facials, slimming, firming, treatment for mothers to-be,
as well as a full product range including men's products. This,
apart from our other regular services. The academy encourages
youngsters to learn the profession at a viable cost. We have
undertaken a campaign to create awareness in the people by
holding free workshops every month in the areas of health, beauty
and fitness.
My plans for the future include introducing Lifestyle Clinique's
own range of skin care and hair care products. We are also
looking at setting up an Interactive Resource Centre, with up-to-
date computer terminals and `smart boards' for both formal
teaching as well as interactive open learning programs.
I also advise on setting up of salons - design, colour schemes,
layouts, creation of a right ambience and guidance on retailing
and merchandising and recommendations on effective stock control
and management.
My father has been my mentor and guide and my whole family has
put in hours of work at a time when I could not employ too many
staff members.
My children too have been a great source of strength. Presently
my personal life has taken a backseat, as my profession is very
demanding. However, I hope to get the equation right in the days
to come! As for the future, I am confident that my business will
grow and success at Lifestyle Clinique - Health, Beauty & Fitness
is certain to continue.
