Q & A ON CAREER CONCERNS

Dated 13th Feb. 2002

I am psychology graduate and wish to know more about human resources. What does a course in human resources deal with?

Ravi Ranjan Singh

Haryana

Human resource management deals with man-management and involves interaction with all levels of employees in an organisation. Working in human resources can include working at a strategic level on a range of HR policies, processes and practices in relation to the business needs of the organisation.

The challenge for personnel officers or HR managers is to assist (through training programmes etc) other team members to realise their potential and contribute to the best of their abilities.

The following universities offer a master's degree in HRM- Bhavnagar University, Gujarat; Jamia Millia Islamia, New Delhi; and the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Vadodara. You can contact the respective universities for further information.

I am doing my first-year BE (civil engineering). I would like to know the future prospects for the degree and also some computer courses that will be very useful for me.

Vijay Kumar

Mumbai (Via Email)

In the government sector, civil engineers find jobs in the armed forces and the departments of irrigation, public works, roads, airports, harbours, ports, railways, water and sewerage. In the private sector, companies engaged in housing, infrastructure and consultancy offer employment opportunities to civil engineers.

Due to the opening up of the economy and privatisation of infrastructure development, prospects for growth are bright. You can also take the Indian Engineering Services examination. CAD and CAM are two courses that come handy for a civil engineer.

I am an Intermediate student (PCM) and wish to take the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT). Please provide me with the relevant details of the examination and it is held.

Twinkle Tom,

The SAT (Scholastic Aptitude Test) exam is a seven- section examination divided into two topics. Three sections cover verbal, three cover math, and there is one experimental section that can cover either verbal or math. The highest score is 1600 and 1/4 mark penalty for an incorrect answer.

The experimental section is used for testing purposes only and will not affect your final score. Registration deadlines are typically five weeks prior to the test. You can get more information about the test by visiting www.collegeboard.com

I am a final year B.Sc degree (chemistry) student and wish to know the options open for higher studies. Also please mention the universities offering the degree.

I am a student of mechatronics (mechanical and electronics). I would like to know more about the subject and its applicability as well as the future prospects of the course.

Anand Agarwal

New Delhi

There is good scope for candidates with a background in mechatronics, as the need for professionals in this discipline is rapidly increasing. Though mechatronics is based on mechanical engineering, it is a distinctly different discipline. The course will train you to work with electronic and computer control systems. The applications for mechatronics engineering are virtually unlimited. Graduates from this program can find employment in South East Asian countries.

You can find employment with companies involved in electronics and mechatronics as well as the health care industry.
