Q & A ON CAREER CONCERNS Dated 03rd Mar. 2002
My son is planning to do his intermediate (plus 2) this year
(PCMB with CBSE board). He is keen on studying at the Armed
Forces Medical College, Pune. Kindly let me know the procedure
for joining AFMC and what is the syllabus for the entrance exam?

The entrance examination for admission into the Armed Forces
Medical College, Pune is held every year, usually in the month of
May. To be eligible to apply, your son must have passed the 12th
standard(intermediate) examination in his first attempt with
physics, chemistryand biology, with at least 60 per cent marks in
aggregate with not lessthan 50 per cent marks in English, and 50
per cent marks in each of thescience subjects. Candidates
appearing for their plus 2 (intermediate)examinations, in the
year of the examination are also eligible to apply.
Prospectus and application forms can be obtained from the officer
in charge (Admission), AFMC, Pune, in January on payment of
requisite charges in the form of bank draft drawn in favor of the
Commandment, Armed Forces Medical College, Pune.
The entrance examination consists of one paper, of 3 hours
durationcomprising four parts of objective type-questions. The
nearest centresfor the entrance exam are Pune or Mumbai. Based on
the performance inthe written test, the selected candidates are

I wish to appear for the AIEEE (All India Engineering Entrance
Exam) exam to be conducted on May 19th, 2002. I would be obliged
if you could tell me about the syllabus for the exam and also let
me know from where I can get the application forms for the exam?

The test for AIEEE will be based on a common minimum syllabus
drawn from different State boards of school education. The AIEEE
is timed to enable candidates to prepare for their school-
leaving examinations. The test will comprise multiple
choice/objective questions in physics, chemistry and mathematics.
An additional aptitude test will be given to candidates opting
for the B.Arch programme. As for students seeking admission into
B.Pharma, they will have to appear for a test in biology in
addition to physics and chemistry. The first AIEEE will be
conducted in May next year according to a gazette notification
issued by the Department of Secondary & Higher Education in the
HRD Ministry. Detailed score cards with rank/marks will be issued
to the students. The fee will be kept at a nominal rate. The

The information bulletin containing the application form and
otherdetails will be available from 1st February 2002. The last
date forreceipt of completed application form in the CBSE office
by Registered / Speed Post is March 4th 2002.
What does forensic science deal with? Please mention the names of
colleges that offer this course and the job opportunities open
for one after the degree.

Forensic science is concerned with the application of scientific
principles in the investigation of crime. It is a science where
various technologies are developed and used to uncover evidence
from crime scenes where apparently none existed. For instance, if
a hair or a little blood is found at the crime scene, various
tests are undertaken to determine the nature of the crime, such
as DNA samples etc. Finger print identification is also comes
under forensics.
At the graduate level, Dr Harisingh Gour Vishwavidyalaya, Sagar,
M.P,and Karnatak University offer criminology and forensic
science as anoptional subject; and the University of Madras
offers criminology as amain subject. You can pursue this course
at the M.Sc level aftercompleting your B.Sc. Forensic science is
offered as one-year diplomacourse at the PG Department of
Anthropology, Utkal University, VaniVihar, Bhubaneshwar - 751004.
Candidates with an M.Sc. or an MBBS canseek admission. The
Department of Anthropology at Delhi Universityoffers a diploma in
forensic anthropology.
After completion of the course, you can expect to find employment
withgovernment agencies like the Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI),Intelligence Bureau (IB) and the police department. You can
also findemployment with private investigation firms. These firms
generally offer good remuneration, as their services are much
sought after nowadays.
I am a final year B.Sc computer science student and am interested
in doing a PG course in visual communication from a reputed
institute in Mumbai. Kindly list the institutes which offer the
same.

The Indian Institute of Technology, Mumbai offers a Master's
degree in visual communication. You need to be a graduate in fine
arts (applied art) from NID (5 year Diploma) to apply for the
course. A common entrance examination (CEED) is held to select
the candidates.Notification of the examination generally appears
sometime inDecember/January. Tests are conducted in February at
IIT Mumbai, Delhi,Kharagpur, Chennai, and the Indian Institute of
Science, Bangalore.
I am doing BBA (final year) and wish to take up MCA. I would be
obliged if you can mention the names of universities that take-in
students without mathematics as a qualifying criterion at the
intermediate level.
