I am a science (Botany) graduate from Madras University and wish to take up M.Sc (Environmental Science). Please list the names of the universities, which offer this course either through correspondence or the regular stream.

I am a mechanical engineer and wish to make a career in web designing. I would like to know the difference between a web designer and a graphic designer. What are the courses available in web designing?

Web designers create the pages, layouts, and graphics for websites. They are authorised to maintain web servers and official school web sites, scan for appropriate content, and receive suggestions and complaints regarding web content and design, and also who designs/creates/maintains an individual web page or an individual web site. Graphics is a part of visual communication. Graphic designers are artists whose creations are intended to express ideas, convey information, or draw attention to a product. They are the visual artists who exhibit their fine arts skills at the service of commercial clients. It encompasses other disciplines as film and animation work, typography and lettering, illustration, printing processes and printmaking, display and exhibition work, technical graphics for engineering, calligraphy, model-making, packaging, design for advertising and so on.

You do not require a formal university degree to become a web designer. There are any number of private institutes that are offer short-term courses related to web designing. The Gemological Institute of India, 29 Gurukul Chambers, 187-189 Mumbadevi Road, Mumbai offers programmes in: Gemology, diamond gradingand assorting pearls. Some of the courses are offered through the regular stream and some through correspondence. Indian DiamondInstitute, Katargam, GIDC, Sumul Dairy Road, Surat- 395008; S.G. Jhaveri Centre for Diamond Technology, Shri Bhagubhai Mafatlal Polytechnic, VileParle W, Mumbai - 400056; Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council, Jaipur-302003; Jewellery Design and Training Institute (JDTI), Noidaoffers a whole range of courses dealing with all aspects of the gem and jewellery Industry including, jewellery design and technology, gemology,finishing, polishing, repairing, mould-making, market research and presentation, etc. The Gemstones Artisans Training School (sponsored by GOI), Jaipur-302017 trains students for diamond/coloured gemstones cutting and polishing. Small Industries Services Institute, Guindy, Chennai-600032 offers training courses in Gem cutting and polishing. The Indian Gemological Institute, Barakhamba Road and National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) in New Delhi conduct a three-year intensive diploma programme in accessory design, which also includes jewellery designing.

I want to know about the career and job prospects after completing my P.G in human rights from the Indian Institute of Human Rights, NewDelhi. I am doing my L.L.B from Delhi University. Can I pursue this course along with my L.L.B?

A degree in law, complemented with another in human resource is a good combination. Many international organisations and NGOs are constantly onthe lookout for students with a background in human rights. These include United Nations (UNIFEM, ILO, UNESCO, UNDCP, UNFPA, WHO, etc)CRY, AWARE, THE Red Cross, DANIDA, YMCA, YWCA and many more. You can also work with labour courts and as a volunteer and with considerable work experience even work with the government as advisers on policy and legislation on issues such as child rights, youth and funding of such groups. Volunteers with social work and counselling backgrounds have also been placed with several NGOs involved in social activism.

I am a science graduate and would like to know about universities, which offer a course in advertising and public relations through correspondence. What is the eligibility criterion and the career opportunities in the field?
