Creditable credit worthiness

HAVING a credit card is more than just a matter of convenience. Its time management, intelligent purchase decisions, good budgeting skills and smart money management. But the most important skill is evading credit card fraudsters!

Credit card thefts and frauds can occur anytime, anywhere. Safeguard yourself from such mishaps by following a few simple and easy to remember tips.

* When you opt for a credit card, find out everything you can about it from the vendor. Clarify all your doubts from usage, benefits, and options to effective management and safety tips.

* Leave no room for fraud! Sign your card as soon as you receive it from the service provider.

* Follow the smart money management etiquette. Avoid bunching your credit cards along with other currency. Have a separate pouch or cardholder for it.

* Always, always carry your card on your person wherever you go. Remember lending a credit card can be dangerous.

* Pay-up your credit card bills on time. Don't encourage account `mugging!'

* Check your account frequently.

* Dedicate a folder to maintain your account statements, bills and penalties. Have duplicates of important bills.

* File receipts of recent purchases, at least till you can compare them with your statement of bills and clear any anomalies.

* Report any problems immediately and in writing to the concerned authorities. Delay in grievance reportage is action postponed

* Avoid divulging your account numbers, writing them on envelopes, stray paper slips, or telling them over the phone (unless you are sure it wont be misused).

* Destroy all traces of faulty receipts

* Ascertain the genuineness of all deals, travel packages, `quick money' options etc that ask you for your account numbers

* Never ever sign on anything blank - whether it is a cheque, voucher or a receipt.

* Finally, don't forget to collect your credit card after you've used it.
