Higher and hire!

THE HINDU Opportunities Job Fair 2006 is a scant week away and those of you that have received your Hall Entry Tickets must be all spruced up and getting ready for the event of the year.

The modality and process for admission has changed this year as mentioned elsewhere in this issue of Opportunities, but the rules of presentation, interviewing and pitching yourself well, have not. These remain the same and on particularly insistent demand from my readers we are reprinting all those pointers and advice regarding interviews, dressing, presentation and poise that we have given you in the past.

Do please play particular attention to the part of dressing for an interview. Even if you are an experienced candidate, working in an IT environment, please remember that casual dressing will not have your interviewer raring to leap out of his seat and press an offer into your waiting hands. You have to do your bit to impress him with the depth of your knowledge and ability - and your observance of the rules of decency and urbanity. So neatness and correctness is what you fortunate ones need display to expect a successful conclusion to your efforts.

At the last fair in Hyderabad, I noticed many aspirants in slack shirts and slippers, but I assumed they had only come to look around. I was wrong. They had come looking for a job, and despite their exemplary behaviour - and that it really was - they did not impress the recruiter much. Sad, because when they came in to tell me about their experience, I noticed that all of them were improperly or imperfectly dressed. It is unfortunate, I know that we still set a great deal of store on the dress and deportment of those we hire, but I think this is a natural tendency. Knowing this, we should make certain that we do not lose out on this count since with a little care we can actually look hireable!

Also pay special attention to the monograph on the thirty-second personal pitch and the one about telling recruiters about yourself. Remember to ask intelligent questions about the company that has invited you, you have enough notice to find out which one(s) that is(are) and therefore use the lead time to explore the Web and find out all you can. Pay attention to details - so polish your shoes and comb your hair and leave your styling gel at home no matter how alluring it looks. Similarly, ladies are encouraged not to wear garish colours or prints, and stick to solid colours with slight contrasts. Go easy on make-up and avoid, as far as possible, western raiment.

Remember, it is all about you and your success - if you want it, make the effort and you will get it! If you do not though, save yourself the trouble of coming all the way to HiTex at Madhapur on the 12th and 13th of January, 2006.
