CAREER CLUES

Generate goodwill by simple actions

Simple actions that spread goodwill make a great difference to the workplace. For greater harmony and equality at the workplace, help goodwill to catch on. Whether you are a frontline employee or a supervisor don’t wait for a sign-off from senior management to spread the message of goodwill. Lead the effort yourself. You become the change you wish to see at your office. By improving your workplace environment, you make a positive difference to the work culture. This benefits you, your co-workers and the organisation on the whole.

Start spreading goodwill through simple acts and witness the positive ripples it creates in the entire workplace. Incorporate kindness, compassion, generosity, forgiveness and, how can I help you?’ mindset into your interactions with others. Goodwill is infectious. When you treat others with respect and kindness they in turn treat you in a similar way.

David Lee, internationally acclaimed authority on organisational practices says, “When you choose to spread goodwill, you are choosing to be an agent for change.” He advises, “Make deposits in the goodwill bank account with others. It’s a simple practice that is within each person’s control and is something that each of us can do to make a positive difference in the world. By consciously making deposits in the goodwill accounts of others, you are having a positive impact on those around you; you are making a difference in your corner of the world.” Here are some simple ways in which you can propagate a goodwill culture at your organisation:

Show appreciation: Faultfinding is second nature to human beings. Consciously refrain from this tendency and make an attempt to find something good in whatever others do. Find opportunities to shower compliments and appreciation on those around you. Nothing makes people happier than receiving praise for their efforts. Encouragement enlivens everyone’s mood and they interact with each other amicably. Hence, cultivate the habit of thanking people for even the smallest help you receive.

Resolve conflicts amicably: Disagreements and conflict of opinions are common in every workplace. Instead of getting into heated exchanges and wordy duels with colleagues, superiors and subordinates over issues of contention make a genuine effort to listen to the other person’s perspective. Your receptiveness will bring about a change in the other person’s attitude too. Instead of trying to prove you wrong and be defensive, he will willingly listen to what you have to say. Lending a patient ear to the other person’s viewpoint is a simple goodwill gesture on your part but its benefits are huge. It makes issues less controversial and makes work life much easier.

Show respect: Everybody likes to be treated with dignity and respect at work. The golden rule is to treat others the way you want them to treat you. Make courtesy, politeness and kindness the hallmarks of your conversation with others and they will surely reciprocate. If a particular department or person has not been helpful to you in the past, never try to pay back in the same coin when they seek your help at any time. Offer the best possible help you can so that it sends them a subtle message to mend their ways. Respect your subordinates as you would respect your superiors. Never belittle people or put down their ideas. Promptly respond to emails, phone calls and requests to let a feeling of camaraderie flourish at the workplace.

Lend a helping hand: If people roll up their sleeves and help each other, there will be drastic improvement in the work environment. So, lead the way in lending a helping hand to co-workers. If you find some information that could be useful to others, pass it along. Help others succeed at their job and they will in turn help you. In times of change, share the difficulties your colleagues or subordinates experience. This will help them learn and adapt quickly.

Make the first move to create a goodwill culture where everybody treats the other with a generous spirit.
