Put ’positive aggression’ in to performance
Picture this: Sreesanth jumps and jives, hits and grins aggressively, as he stumps a batsman of the opposition. The captain, Dhoni, simply smiles and says, he allows his batsman to carry forward positive aggression, as it benefits the team. Now again, didn’t we think aggression was bad? Well, it seems it is not always the case!
Positive aggression is a buzzword that can work wonders for a team; and workplaces comprise of nothing but teams working in coordination! How, then, do we know if one’s aggression has a positive connotation or a negative one? “Aggression is a very psychological component,” says a well-known psychologist. “It can be classified under behavioural aggression and aggression in performance,” he further explains.
Often, we come across colleagues who are aggressive for no reason. However, this is not visible in their work output, which is why they are categorised as arrogant or too full of themselves. On the other hand, we have achievers who are aggressive in achieving quality output in terms of their performance. This certainly does not convey the impression that they are arrogant. Instead, it elevates their status as hard-core focussed achievers subtly. This is the difference between positive and negative aggression!
If Sreesanth exhibits an aggressive spirited exterior, with a confident and composed performance that leads to some excellent bowling figures, we all praise him as the next big bowler! However, a shallow aggressive exterior, without any star material on the interior that amounts to nothing but average performance makes us criticise him!
To put it simply aggression can help one attain a certain level of quality in performance that is considered beneficial for the individual and the team!
A cricket team is the most apt comparison to a team in a workplace. The captain needs to endorse positive aggression that can motivate the team players and create a feeling of unity and oneness, besides helping them achieve the desired end.
This theory when applied to every team in the office can help raise the standard of work output! For instance, if a team keeps increasing its level of performance and elevating the standards, it automatically leads to a competitive stance from the other teams.
All thanks to a positive aggressive spirit! This way, the entire workplace aims to attain higher standards, which ultimately brings about the victory of the company.
Some dos to master the art of being positively aggressive:
• Work on your performance. You cannot afford to be aggressive at work, without that star potential requisite for a star performance
• Do not show your aggression physically or verbally. At the workplace it can get you ousted
• Garner your energy and enthusiasm, and make it a point to exhibit it in your performance.
• Remain focussed and clear.
• Maintain a friendly disposition and do not miss out on opportunities that help your team to bond and share some friendly moments! It often promotes unity within the team.
• When you are allotted a task, approach it with aggression and a competitive spirit, to rise above your previous performance.
This way, you can use your own performance as a yardstick.
All along, take care not to get carried away by success. Retain your down-to-earth and approachable stance, while forging all the possible positive aggression in your performance!
