New mags offer internship chances

Numerous movies, soaps and chiklet novels have been devoted to portraying the colourful life of college and the fun-filled days of youth. It is that part of life that witnesses the formation of strong ideas and a vision towards the future. Most of us experience an inclination towards experimenting with different avenues. The aim in every endeavour is to initiate a tight hold on our careers.

The sprouting of magazines dedicated exclusively for the youth has opened new prospects for the youth, even while in college. And most importantly, this is not limited to a certain branch of education, like the arts or communication! Youth magazines have a set-up of various departments. Irrespective of the stream you come from, you can surely fit into one of the departments.

For instance, students pursuing literature or mass communication find it a direct link to get into writing and copy-editing. However, counterparts from the other streams do not necessarily have to lag behind. Sowmya, a commerce student, says, “I work for the marketing team of my magazine, which gives me practical exposure in a field I aspire to pursue my masters”. The sciences are not left behind, either. Students pursuing their computers design layouts of pages and in the process acquaint themselves with page-layout software like PageMaker and QuarkXPress.

Some of the youth magazines have expanded their reach into event management and hosting programmes, to cater to the youth. This simply means, more opportunities for youngsters! “The very fact that I am a part of the content team and the event management team makes my job profile versatile and cemented,” quips Kritika Ghai, a writer-cum-PRO with an exclusive youth magazine.

With such a wide range of opportunities, there is no reason why you shouldn’t give serious thought to becoming part of a youth magazine! How does one approach a magazine and gain entry into the team behind those glossy sheets of pure infotainment?

Start by jotting down the names of magazines that are prominent in your city. Every magazine has a stance that it takes and which, over a period, becomes its USP. For instance, a magazine might focus on creating awareness about environmental hazards, alongside its usual content. You need to decide upon a magazine that is in sync with your ideologies, in case you are strongly opinionated and are aiming to get into the content team.

The next step, obviously, is deciding upon the area you would like to work on for the magazine. For instance, if you are good at networking, you could work as a PRO or do something with roping in advertisements and sponsorships.

Once you know what you want, approach the person incharge of recruiting for the magazine. Generally, youth magazines are receptive to youngsters wanting to join their bandwagon and it is relatively easy to get hold of the contact details of the person incharge of recruitments. The process though differs from one magazine to another. While one magazine could be extremely detailed in its recruitment process, another could offer you an internship easily.

Prepare yourself in accordance with the procedures at the magazine you have chosen. Many of the youth magazines have college students working at the top and in fact, some magazines have been started by a bunch of college students. Hence the interview could be just another interactive session, wherein you could share your eagerness to join the magazine and say how the team could benefit by getting you on board.

Once you manage to impress the people you are a part of the team. Money should definitely not be your criteria, as experience and fun are all that matters.

Log on to your favourite magazine’s website and get hold of the contact details, to become a part of the magazine. Reach out to scores of young-readers and enjoy your share of the limelight, as well. All this, while still in college!
