Job offer -Assess the company before joining

Searching for a job involves interviews, tests and going through the grind before one gets an offer. When one gets a job offer one has to consider if the company will help one achieve career goals.

In the early stages of a career one is interested in career advancement, a challenging job and attaining career goals. Before you accept a job, it is necessary to consider if the organisation can offer these and more to benefit your career.

The first thing you need to do for this is to assess your career goals and see how far it is in alignment with your lifestyle. This is because your lifestyle determines the kind of career you choose and vice versa. You may need to make some changes in either your lifestyle or career or both if these two factors have to work in tandem.

When considering a job offer ensure that the job will be able to accommodate the demands of you lifestyle in terms of money, the time you can devote to work, whether it allows you to pursue your other interests and offers some degree of work-life balance. You need to consider these factors and the changes you need to make before saying yes.

Before you decide to accept a job, make an analysis on the kind of worker you are. For this you need to assess your personality and your interests. The job on offer must fit with your working style. For instance, if you are a self-starter you might be a misfit in a job where tasks can be done only after receiving formal instructions from your boss.

Analyse those factors that make you happy, what generates your interest and enthusiasm and how far these are related to work. Make a list of your likes and dislikes and strengths and weaknesses and assess if the job on offer will offer you enough challenges to keep you contented and happy.

Does it have the potential to fully utilise your strengths and skills and underplay your weaknesses? An understanding of your personality will help you get the correct picture of the kind of worker you are and if working for the company will help you achieve your goals.

Even if all the above factors are in your favour, you still need to assess if the company you choose offers opportunities for growth. For this you need to track the company’s growth, because an organisation on the fast track offers potential for growth. If you know somebody working in the organisation, try to gather information on how and when promotions are given and then take a decision.

Also try to gather information on employee recognition programmes of the company and whether the management values employee contribution and are quick to recognise and reward them. Besides the employer must also be ready to give you an opportunity to utilise the skills you have and also provide training to enhance them and develop new skills.

On your part you need to assess if there is a gap between the skills and qualities you possess and those required for your dream job. If there is a gap you may need to take up some courses or training to develop these skills. If that is not possible, probably you need to reassess your career choice and choose a field, which will put your existing skills to full use.

Before you take up a job, you need to consider the above factors and not lose focus of your career goals so that you follow the right career path.
