To be an entrepreneur, polish your multilevel skills
There is a sense of liberation that comes with being an entrepreneur- you follow your own rules, there are no bosses or managers to listen to and best of all you can put in all the hard work and reap the benefits, your efforts are not just a figure on the company’s profit charts. Though becoming an entrepreneur sounds like an attractive proposition, it requires certain qualities to make a success of it. Running your business successfully requires hard work and along
with it focus, discerning abilities, innovation, communication and organisation.
The first important thing is to have a focus for your business, goals to achieve and targets to meet. You will have to clearly define these factors and pursue them with a single-minded focus because it is easy to get distracted. All your determination and energy must be channelised towards achieving targets. For this it is important that you plan each day and try and achieve what you set out to do on that day.
The ability to discern between the important and the unimportant is a requisite if you have to succeed as an entrepreneur. To discriminate between what is important and what is unimportant you should follow the 80/20 principle. This principle says that 20 percent of anything should bring in 80 percent results. For instance 20 percent of your clients should bring in 80 percent of your sales. Focussing on the 80 and 20 factors, you can distinguish between the important and unimportant factors on any issue. Concentrating on the important factors will aid in productivity. For instance it would be wiser to let go of an employee whose contribution is only 20 percent important. So following this principle will help you to forge ahead in your business.
Innovation is another important factor for success especially when you have to market or promote your business. You have to keep changing your marketing strategy, or your products and services have to be modified according to the demands of the client. Your business has to adapt to varied customers and this is where innovation steps in. If you cannot think of any innovative ideas of your own, hire a person who can or take the help of a consultant. Innovation will give you an edge over competitors.
To be a successful entrepreneur one needs to have excellent communication skills. You must be able to connect to people instantly whether they are your clients, staff or vendors. You must be able to get your point across. You must be good at communicating with individuals and with groups. This comes only with practice. Your speaking and listening skills play a crucial role in your business. Besides this your presentation skills have to be good when you make a presentation or a proposal to a client.
Finally you must be organised in every aspect of your business, whether it is your marketing plans, staff assessment, client meetings or even your day, everything must be planned well. This helps you to manage your business efficiently. Systematising every process allows you to run things efficiently. Organising every aspect of your business will help you control the flow of events and help you have power over the way your business is run. Running one’s own business is easier said than done. It requires more than business acumen. You need to be focussed, organised, and innovative besides being able to discern the importance of things and communicate well. Mastering these skills is vital to succeed as an entrepreneur.
