Not all ’work at home’ jobs are genuine

The concept of working at home has become so popular that a lot of people think that with a computer and Internet connection, one can quite easily make a tidy sum of money each month for little effort.

Fact is that work at home jobs form only a minuscule segment of the job market. Getting one that pays really well is not as easy as it sounds.

The Internet is a great place to research about work at home jobs. You can use the net to survey the market and get an idea of the kind of jobs that are available. Discussion forums and boards allow you to interact with people who are actually doing these kinds of jobs, so you may be able to get a first hand account of what these opportunities are all about.

Having said that, one must remember that a lot of what is advertised in the net is bogus, pure and simple. Many of these phony companies have been set up specifically for harvesting personal information like addresses, bank account numbers, credit card numbers and other data, and defraud innocent customers who are gullible enough to make an advance payment. Anything that comes off the Internet needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

There are companies that offer genuine work at home jobs for employees, but they are few and far between. Information about most of these jobs circulates through networks, and is rarely, if ever, advertised.

Work at home opportunities is more common in some industries like research, consultancy, publishing, telemarketing, medical transcription and software. Some companies take on employees on a regular basis, and after the completion of a stipulated period of time, allow them to telecommute or work at home on contract basis.

You will have to have an extraordinary amount of talent or valuable skills if you are to convince somebody to pay you to work from home at your convenience.

This is a highly competitive industry, and it is unlikely that you will be able to get a job if you are the average worker with average skill sets. And it is hard work all the way.

Working at home in some ways is tougher than a regular 9-5 job because you are out on your own without a boss to supervise your work. If you think you can juggle the keyboard with one hand while holding a baby in the other, it doesn’t work that way.

Companies that offer genuine opportunities expect you to be up to date and professional in all aspects of your work.

Most of these jobs are driven by deadlines, and missing one could mean taking a big pay cut or even losing the job altogether.

Get in touch with friends in the industry and contact companies that are known to offer work at home opportunities to their employees.
