THE guarantees enunciated in persons with disabilities act 1995 for equalisation of opportunities and improving the quality of disabled persons have to be ensured. Accessibility to public places, taking into account different types of disability and providing three per cent job reservations are issues that have to be implemented in full earnest. The media has to play a great role in sensitising public on disability issues. Portraying hearing impaired and speech impaired as a comedy is opposed to all sense of decency. The problem of disability is essentially a human rights issue and not a developmental activity. NGO's public & govt. sector, must work hand in hand to inculcate more sensitivity in dealing with people who are differently abled.
