The collection is called "Burnt Out". But Rajesh Pratap Singh's latest line proves that the designer's zest for creativity isn't still burnt out.
The cool experiments in cotton with a burnt out look "expresses the modern mind. Like today's upwardly mobile youth, the clothes too are burnt out — and not burnt down", says the designer of his collection that's now on display at Evoluzione, Khader Nawaz Khan Road, Nungambakkam.
"It reflects the phase of transition — for assessing the damage before re-building. Like the burnt out patches on the couture, some things in life have changed forever. It signals the need to rise from the ashes... with hope and calculated calm."
The range of separates come with or without surface ornamentation in subtle shades of brown, taupe and fawn creating an earthy look that is stylish and contemporary.
Singh, one of today's celebrated designers is famous for transforming ethnic silhouettes, fabrics and traditional embellishments to suit modern tastes. Burnt Out reflects his experiments with shapes, construction and textures. The finesse in craftsmanship comes through in the crushing, pleating, appliqué, shadow work and traditional embroidery techniques that he uses. Tops, trousers, skirts... the cuts are classy and the styling very "in". Accentuating the burnt out effect are the brown, uneven rims and real cigarette burns in the collection. Check it out.
