THERE'S MORE to Vietnam than its violent history and scenic beauty. The small nation is also known for fostering a variety of crafts such as silk fabric weaving, cane and rattan artefacts, pottery, wood block printing and lacquer ware. In fact, there's a global demand for the country's unique crafts.
Some of these are now on display at an exhibition at Fabindia. Pressed bamboo and lacquer products have been imported from Vietnam as part of the showroom's initiative to showcase the craft traditions of the Far East.
What stands out about the tableware and decorative items is their simplicity. No frills, yet classy. That's what makes the bowls, trays, urns, vases, coasters and soup bowls attractive.
The pressed bamboo items come in four finishes — bamboo, tobacco (dull matte finish), scape black and wash tint (comes in bright hues of green, mustard, maroon and bluegreen). The prices range from Rs. 150 for a salad bowl to Rs. 2,000 for moon jars. The wooden products come in three finishes - eggshell, snake skin and zillion.
Coming to the lacquer ware, it is believed that the tradition in Vietnam can be traced back to the 4th or the 5th Century, though it was not before the 15th Century that it began to be used for decorative purposes. A striking aspect of the range is the vibrant hues used, be it the metallic shades of bronze, silver, gold and blue or the lacquer finish in blue, red and gold.
The products on display include sushi trays, vases, bowls and coasters. As for the prices, they are between Rs. 165 and Rs. 900. There are very few pieces on show, but each item is meant to add a dash of elegance to your interiors.
The exhibition is on at Fabindia, Ilford House, Woods Road, till October 31, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
