What is collage?
Romare Bearden's `Tomorrow I May Be Far Away, 1966/1967,' a collage of various papers with charcoal and graphite on canvas
WHILE CUBISM faded out in the 1920s, one of the off shoots of Cubism, papier colles, or collage - the art of gluing together various materials on a flat surface - has often been called the art form of the twentieth century.
The principles of collage are also used in montage (the art of combining collected and processed images) Photomontage (the art of combining photographic images) Assemblage (joining materials that project out from the surface of the plane) and found objects (mass produced objects selected by the artist combined with other objects for effect).
Wikipedia defines collage as "an assemblage of different forms to create a new whole." Collage artists place a great deal of importance on the meaning of their work - it is not enough just to cut up stuff and put them together - they have to convey a meaning.
Other media
There are collages in other media like sound collage where tape could be cut and spliced together in a different order. John Lennon is the most famous practitioner of this when he used crowd noises and sound effects in Revolution 9.
There is also the collage novel where images are selected and collaged together following a theme or narrative. It is not surprising that the fractured sensibility of the collage towers over our splintered consciousness.
