Raised eyebrows at the thought of married women participating in beauty contests is a thing of the past. Today, we also have a couple of women from our state to prove that they need not be only home-bodies. Adding to the growing list is Shrimati Andhra Pradesh 2006, Swarnamai Godipi.

Swarnamai took part in the contest conducted by Zee Telugu for married women from across the state. After two months of intensive training, she went on to win the title last week and says the feeling still hasn't sunk in. Explaining how she entered the contest, she says, "I saw ads on TV calling for entries and I thought why not give it a shot?. After I got married and moved to Hyderabad I got busy with other things." Swarnamai is no newcomer to the fashion and modelling world. She lived in Vishkhapatnam before she moved to the city and did a bit of modelling there. She even won a couple of beauty pageants at the city-level and made her foray as a fashion designer a few years ago.

As a designer, Swarnamai likes to focus on clothes for men because she feels, "That not enough work is being done in men's wear in the city and there is not much good-quality clothes being made." She designs kurta-pyjamas, sherwanis and jodhpuris in Indian clothes and shirts in Western wear for men. "My first collection comprised of 300 shirts and even before I got a chance to hold an exhibition, the collection was sold out." Maiee's- her line of clothes is still alive and Swarna's latest projects are some designs for T.V anchors.

Swarna goes on to explain why, as a designer, she has been on a hiatus. "After I had my baby, my hands have been full."

She goes on to say that her entire day revolves around the baby. "When I was training for the contest, I would be in the gym at 5 or 6am so that she doesn't realise that I'm not around. I spend the entire day with her. Now that she's a little older, I can take on additional activities."

Additional activities also include opening a crèche or a play school for little ones. She says her family and her husband have been very encouraging and supportive of her participating and wining the contest, but she is sure of one thing-- while winning the title does give her a certain high, she would like to concentrate on promoting herself as a professional, as a designer for men's clothes.
