There is no one set rule to fashion be it clothes, make up, the look or even hairstyle. What rules the roost is what looks unconventional. Something that breaks away from the boring normal with a bit of shock value that makes heads turn is what is likely to become a trend. This was obvious at the recently held South Zone's L'Oreal Colour Trophy Contest at Le Meridien.
The finalists of the South Zone, 28 of them, sashayed down the ramp sporting cuts and colours chosen by their stylists. Going by what one saw that evening, straight hair is in with streaks of red, blonde and brown. And in this section the ones with short cuts with a few long strands left wildly at irregular lengths and edges to add that dramatic touch were adjudged as winners. For the men, it was surely long hair with most of it falling into their eyes.
Trendsetters
On the catwalk, the models were accompanied by their hairdressers and stylists who themselves looked like trendsetters. Gone are the days when stylists were non-entities who inhabited the backstage and watched his/her creation take the centre stage. It was definitely an evening where the stylists were out there to conquer the world.
So it was Roshni from Chennai's Kanya and Studio Profile's Reegyan Lepcha from Nungambakkam who emerged winners of the New Generation Hair Colourists Awards. F. Salon's Ladup Lepcha was the runner-up while Bounce Style's (Bangalore) Jason Kingsley was the winner of the Men's Image Award. Rajesh from Manea was the winner of the L'Oreal Professional Colour Trophy Award, followed by Dilip Hemchandra from Bounce Style (Chennai) as the first runner-up and Lucy Teresa Lepcha from F. Salon as the second runner-up.
The event was judged by Alim Hakim (celebrity hairstylist), James Ferreira (fashion pundit), Rafique Sayed (photographer), Mehra Kolah (makeup expert) and Sathya Saran (editor of ME). It was not just a hair colouring and styling event but a talent hunt for stylists who could dress international models with ease and a platform to launch young stylists. The judges looked for creativity, fashion, professionalism and passion; searching for a style and a trend inspired wearable consumer look.
More than 300 contestants participated in the event out of which 113 were short-listed and 28 chosen for the South Zone finals. The winners of this round will participate in the finals later in Mumbai.
It was not only on stage one saw trends and fashion; even the audience was pretty fashion conscious. After the contest, the winners were called on the stage to cut the special winners' cake. Cocktails and snacks followed after which lights were dimmed and music turned on for everyone to simply let their hair down as the event was not just about "competition but also about having fun".
