CONTEMPORARY TWIST To age-old beads
Usually confined to the roadside, gypsies eke out a living selling colourful beads. Now, they have been given a platform to showcase their creativity.
At the "All Handicrafts Exhibition", on at Poompuhar in Town Hall, the gypsies have finally got recognition.
"This exhibition is aimed at helping out rural artisans. And, we have introduced a separate stall for gypsies where you can see how they have creatively transformed beads into different articles," says R. Kalaimani, Regional Manager, Poompuhar.
Embroidered quilts and pillows, which are exported to Canada and the U.S., are also part of the show. Around 400 girls from Chennai, who are trained in this craft, have executed the work.
Every item on display at the exhibition demonstrates the work of human hands.
There are carvings on pen stands, jewel boxes and flower vases, statues made of wood and jade and various styles of painting.
Wall hangings, key chains, chains, Tanjore pictures, tablemats, straw pictures and dining tables all sport neat handwork.
Other exhibits include jute bags, shells, Hyderabad pearls, precious stones and silver jewellery.
Curtains, rudrakshas from Nepal and other beads are also on display. A discount of 10 per cent is offered on all items.
This exhibition is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. till August 10.
