Barney over coffee

Barnie's International coffee chain arrives in India

The second largest coffee chain in the world, Barnie's has come to India with its first outlet strategically placed at the Spice World Mall, Noida. Actress Perizaad Zorabian, the brand ambassador for Barnie's, inaugurated the outlet the other day with much fanfare. With over 30 varieties of coffee and more than 20 flavours of tea, it promises to be a real treat for all caffeinelovers. With competitive pricing and creative marketing strategies, it is still to be seen how Barnie's takes a out of the market of already established players like Barista and Café Coffee Day.

Cashing in

Gaurav Marya, Managing Director, Barnie's India, was excited and optimistic about the future. Asked about the increasing competition, he replied, "Brands like Barista have already introduced and inculcated a coffee drinking culture in India, and now it's easier for us to market ourselves as a brand that is respected all over the world for its quality and taste. We have introduced freezers in India, which is one of our highest selling products in the West. Other than coffee and tea, we specialise inhot and crisp multi-grain sandwiches, muffins, doughnuts and pastries. To suit Indian tastes we have chicken tikka and cheese-tomato sandwiches."

Perizaad, known for her distinct and unorthodox roles in movies like Joggers' Park and Morning Raga, seemed excited about the launch. "It is good to be associated with such a respectable brand. I really liked the advertisements as they show calmness and serenity. I really like their coffees," she said, enjoying a chicken sandwich. Jason Burk, Franchise Manager, Barnie's International, U.S.A., was also present on the occasion. "We expect to revolutionise the industry by opening up more than 300 stores and 150 kiosks in the next five years. More than 25 crores would be pumped into the India operations in the next five years. Our lounge format would offer luxury ambience where all hardand soft drinks would be served." Marya added, "We expect to reach the breakeven point in the next three years." When asked if a joint venture with an Indian companywas on the cards, he replied, "We have no shortage of funds and for the time being, we wish to be in total control of our business."

With competition hotting up, customers can hunt around for that perfect cup of coffee.
