|
Striped beauty Learn more about the tiger all this week
To commemorate World Animal Day, Animal Planet will air a special week-long programming on the most majestic animal on earth – Tiger. Threatened by many factors, including growing human populations, loss of habitat and illegal hunting, tigers t
oday face an ongoing battle for survival. However, tigers continue to amaze researchers, wildlife filmmakers and viewers around the world.
For five consecutive days, viewers can leap into the life of this ferocious animal on Tiger Week, slated to air from October 1 to 5 at 11.00 p.m. Tiger Week will showcase their magnificence as they hunt prey, battle threats and develop new relationships in some of the most dangerous communities in the world. Highly prized for their skin, bones, teeth and even whiskers, tigers are targeted by everyone from small-time poachers who trap their prey in primitive snares to organized criminals. Poaching, illegal trade of their body parts and destruction of habitat have greatly reduced tiger populations in the wild.
October 1: In Search Of Maneaters: Tess McGregor tries to complete one of the most dangerous tasks a naturalist can embark upon – taking a head count of the elusive man-eating Bengal tiger in the Sundarbans.
October 2: Land of the Tiger: Tiger’s Domain: The Indian subcontinent is home to a dazzling array of plants and animals. Viewers join Indian wildlife expert Valmik Thapar as he shares his love and experiences of this rich and varied landscape.
October 3: Land of the Tiger - Sacred Waters: From Ranthambhore to the western state of Gujarat, this show encounters India’s rarest animal species including the fabled Bengal tiger and the rare Asiatic lion.
October 4: Tiger Zero: This hour-long programme reveals India’s tiger crisis. Across the sub-continent, tigers are being poached in snares, shot or electrocuted. Recently the Delhi police raided a warehouse basement and discovered a huge stock of wildlife remains. A discovery of this scale is not something Indian tiger expert Valmik Thapar can ignore. In his bid to stop the numbers from dwindling further, Valmik confronts leading politicians.
October 5: Tigers of The Sunderbans: The Sundarbans are popularly referred to as the last refuge of the tiger. Wildlife expert Tess is not sure about the tiger population though many believe it to be the only one in the world large enough to sustain itself to the next century.
