Having already referred to the many tidings that came when the postman knocked, there’s just one small item left that I have to add under that heading. And that is a letter from reader Theodore Bhaskaran, who is now in Bangalore.

He writes: “Kanji thotti (Miscellany, October 8) does not refer to a container. It refers to a place where kanchi is dispensed. It is common usage in Chennai even today. The firewood depot is called Viraku thotti. The word thotti is a word with more than one connotation.” I bow to Theodore’s better knowledge of Tamil.
