Salsa is turning out to be an appealing way of keeping fit and toning muscles

SMART STEPS An interesting way to stay in shape and have fun doing it

It doesn’t take much to convince most of us that we need to exercise. A look at one’s floppy stomach and John Abraham’s washboard abs is more than enough inspiration. Alas! For most of us this is where the story ends.

Day after day you look at the increasing flab and promise yourself that soon you will join a gym or a salsa class, but unfortunately that day never comes. Even if you drag yourself into a gym, the enthusiasm vanishes within the first few weeks. Unless you have strong motivation you cannot continue to stick to that strict regimen for long. Perhaps these are the reasons that have made salsa an attractive route to lose those extra kilos and have fun while doing it.

Salsa is emerging as a replacement for monotonous aerobic exercises nowadays. Salsa classes with unconventional music and twisty twirls, are starting to get people interested in it, while at the same time giving them the necessary workout. “Dancing is an aerobic activity that your body will love; it reduces stress and increases flexibility as well as overall fitness. It even keeps you happy and mentally agile,” says Dr. Suramya Anand, KMC, Manipal. Salsa is a mixture of many Latin American and Afro-Caribbean dances. Traditional salsa is very spontaneous and quite energetic. At times it is slow while at others it is fast, varying with the music. Body movements and turns are an important part of it, so the overall look and feel of the salsa is quite different.

Salsa is one of the best ways to enjoy yourself while also getting in shape. The continuous movement of salsa not only burns calories but also tones the body, most specifically the legs. It also strengthens muscles without the high impact that weight training, running, or sprinting involve.

Surprisingly salsa can be practiced even alone. “You can learn salsa in the privacy of your home or in a studio, with or without a partner but the look that duet salsa has is very appealing,” says Arpita Shetty, a salsa student.

If you feel down in the dumps one Saturday night and feel frustrated with your weekly exercise routine, why not check out your local salsa club for a quick refreshment that will not only improve your social circle but also help you to keep the kilos at bay.
