Feast for philatelists
S. MUTHIAH
Being held for the first time in Tamil Nadu is the Indian National Philatelic Exhibition. INPEX 2008, the tenth exhibition, is being organised by the Department of Posts, Government of India. The Chairperson of the Organising Committee of the exhibit
ion, to be held from January 2 to 6 at the Rani Meyammai and Rajah Muthiah Halls in Egmore, is Indira Krishna Kumar, Principal Chief Postmaster General, Tamil Nadu Circle. Apart from the entire Tamil Nadu Circle’s officers helping to put the exhibition together, the South India Philatelists’ Association, Chennai, is teaming in this effort that will present over 1000 frames, including rare collections from the National Philatelic Museum, India Security Press and the Army Postal Service.
The South Indian Philatelists’ Association, now in its 50th year, was founded in 1956 through the efforts of the late Varadharajulu Chettiar of Cuddalore and five enthusiastic stamp collectors. Rev. Christadoss of the Danish Mission Church, in whose hall the first meetings were held, was the first president. Other early supporters of the Association were M. L. Tandon, S. T. Srinivasagopalachari and V. S. Rajagopalan.
The first stamp exhibition of the Association was in 1959. The Association has been organising, from April 2003, weekly theme exhibitions in the exhibition hall of the Philatelic Bureau in the campus of the Anna Salai Post Office.
