Keyboard, the culprit

Poorly positioned keyboards can damage nerves in the hand

NUMB FINGERS It could be due to your keyboard

Numb fingers or pain spreading through the hands and arms are both indicators of possible carpal tunnel syndrome or a pinched hand nerve. Excess stress on the wrist often leads to outbreaks, characterised by swelling of the tendons, reports the Docto r’s Newspaper (Arzte Zeitung), published in Neu-Isenburg. Outbreaks can be caused by a badly positioned keyboard or poorly installed bicycle handlebars. Rheumatic diseases can also cause the problem. Most afflicted are those between 40 and 70-years, says Axel Wanivenhaus, a Vienna-based professor. Left untreated, the pain can spread from the lower arm to the neck and lead to a loss of strength in the fingers, making it almost impossible to open bottles. Anti-inflammatories and braces are usually used for treatment. If these don’t work, experts often recommend surgery. — dpa
